Full Moon Maple

We like to call this Acer japonicum variety “full moon maple.” In Japan its nickname is hauchiwa 羽団扇, meaning “feather fan.”

Euonymus, the Brocade Tree

Euonymus alata is known in Japan as nishikigi 錦木, meaning “brocade tree,” for its wild, interwoven variety of fall colors. In the West it is also known, appropriately enough, as “burning bush.”

The transformation Euonymus makes is remarkable. Within weeks, all the foliage of this tree will be a mass of brilliant magenta.
