A favorite of one of the Portland Japanese Garden’s early supporters, white azaleas figure prominently in its design—particularly in the more formal styles of the Flat Garden and Stroll Garden, where the gentle solidity of their rounded tamamono pruning is most at home.

One plant, different flowers.
With azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, Korean dogwood, and a few lingering cherries in bloom, we are entering the most colorful time of the year—just in time for the throngs of gardening enthusiasts arriving at our Annual Plant Sale. Our gardeners predict the wisteria arbor will be in full flower within 3 weeks, and the iris beds may bloom as early as mid-May this year.

Just last year, a new Akebono seedling was planted here by the mayors of Portland and Sapporo, our sister city in Japan.
