			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, Korean dogwood, and a few lingering cherries in bloom, we are entering the most colorful time of the year&mdash;just in time for the throngs of gardening enthusiasts arriving at our <a href="http://www.japanesegarden.com/events/plant-sale">Annual Plant Sale</a>. Our gardeners predict the wisteria arbor will be in full flower within 3 weeks, and the iris beds may bloom as early as mid-May this year.</p>

A visit to the Garden this week promises lingering magnolia and cherry blossoms, delicate pieris and enkianthus, budding dogwood, rhododendrons, and vibrant azaleas:</p>

<p>Many of the garden&#8217;s small-leaved azalea plants are pruned into neat, globular shapes. This technique&mdash;credited to the Zen Buddhist monks of medieval Japan&mdash;is called <em class="romaji">karikomi</em> 刈り込み, also meaning, &#8220;haircut.&#8221;</p>
