Held in Summer 2009 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association, Parallel Worlds featured exquisitely designed traditional ceremonial robes created by Ainu artists from Hokkaido and Native American artists of the Pacific Northwest.

Our hope is that this exhibition will draw attention to the triumph of spirit of the First People who inhabited these lands on both sides of the North Pacific—a spirit that is eloquently expressed in the unparalleled beauty of their ceremonial robes.

Exquisitely designed and handmade Ainu Attush and Ruunpe ceremonial robes from Hokkaido are juxtaposed with stunningly woven Ravenstail and Chilkat robes by Native American artists of the Pacific Northwest.
