Dancers, drummers, and singers of Tsimshian Haayuuk bring the ceremonial robes alive when they perform in full regalia. Featuring traditional box drums and handmade button robes, masks, and headpieces that hold family and clan crests.

Lecture: Woven Stories: Northwest Coast Weavings in the Collection of the Portland Art Museum

Wednesday, June 17, 7:30pm

Anna Strankman, Curator of Native American Art at the Portland Art Museum, will discuss the Museum's collection of Northwest Coast weavings as well as their connection to the past and future treasures within the traditions. Housed in the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Center for Native American Art, these collections are remarkable for both depth and diversity, consisting of more than 5,000 prehistoric and historic objects created by some 200 cultural groups from throughout North America.

Chisato "Kitty" Dubreuil is an art historian of Ainu and Pacific Northwest cultures. She was co-curator of the groundbreaking exhibition Ainu: Spirit of a Northern People at the Smithsonian Institute in 1999. In this two-part presentation, she explores each of these cultures and discusses their similarities and contrasts.
