Portland, Ore. – The Japanese Garden of Portland has been invited to participate in several events in the nation’s capital during the coming year. First and foremost, the Garden will be featured in an outdoor exhibit on the Terrace of the historic U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) Conservatory, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Portland’s Japanese Garden is one of only two gardens from the West Coast—and the only Japanese garden—selected to participate in this exhibit celebrating the diversity and beauty of public gardens in America. A Japanese garden designed by Toru Tanaka will be created on the Terrace to represent the Japanese Garden in Portland. The exhibit, on display from May 26 through October 8, is expected to draw over 300,000 visitors and is presented by the USBG in conjunction with the 2007 American Public Gardens Association’s National Conference.
Additionally, as part of National Cherry Blossom Festival events during the months of March and April, Head Gardener Michael Kondo will build two different on-site Japanese gardens designed by internationally known garden designer Sada Uchiyama. The first garden will be constructed on March 31 at the National Building Museum in DC. The second display, in conjunction with the Japanese-America Society of Washington, DC, will be constructed April 14 on DC’s Freedom Plaza at 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. All of these events are co-sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Oregon as part of its 100th anniversary.
Proclaimed by his Excellency Nobuo Matsunaga, former Ambassador of Japan, to be “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan,” the Japanese Garden of Portland, Oregon is a private 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and is funded through gate admissions, membership dues, and individual and corporate donations.
