Portland Japanese Garden Features Print and Fiber Arts in New Show and Sale

Portland, Oregon – The Portland Japanese Garden Gift Store is pleased to present Texture: The Art of Paper and Fiber Show and Sale April 10–18, a special presentation of paper and fiber arts and crafts created by more than 25 different artists in our community whose work reflects the influence of Eastern traditions. With a deep appreciation for the exquisite texture and beauty of fine paper and handmade textiles, these artists employ Japanese motifs and pursue traditional techniques, such as kiri-e (cut paper pictures) and kata-zome (stencil dyeing).

Colorfully printed chiyogami—an elaborately decorated paper perfected in the Edo period—has inspired the paper artists in this show to create a variety of finely crafted collages and inventive origami folded paper shapes. Textile artists using kusaki-zome natural dyeing techniques perfected in Japan to create scarves, while others employ American quilting techniques to interpret striking Japanese motifs in intricately stitched wall-hangings.

Texture: The Art of Paper and Fiber Show and Sale runs April 10–18 in the Garden’s Pavilion during regular Garden hours and is free with Garden admission. A special preview of the show will be held on April 9 from 5-7pm and is also free with Garden admission. Many of the artists will be on hand for the preview evening and light refreshments will be served. For more information visit http://www.japanesegarden.com/events/texture
