Cultural Performance: Shinobue Flute & Tsugaru Shamisen

Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute and Tsugaru shamisen by Yumi Torimaru. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:30pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center.

Shinobue is a Japanese side-blown bamboo flute that has a high-pitched sound. Traditionally shinobue is an important part of the music of festivals, folk songs, Shinto ritual, and theater performances of kabuki and Noh.

The shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. The Tsugaru shamisen originated from Tsugaru Peninsula in present-day Aomori Prefecture and is widely used throughout Japan.
